Tansy Parker's Last Ditch Cake

Ingredients:
1/2 cup Crisco shortenin'
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
2 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 chopped almonds, walnuts, or pecans

Instructions:
1) Preheat oven to 350�.
2) Grease a 9 by 13 inch pan.
3) Thoroughly cream together the shortenin' and the white sugar.
4) Beat in the whole egg.
5) Beat in the two yolks.
6) Beat in the vanilla and the flour, then pour batter into
the prepared cake pan.
7) In a separate bowl, beat the two egg whites 'til stiffened.
8) Slowly add the brown sugar to the egg whites,
beatin' 'til heavy peaks form, then add nuts.
9) Spread meringue over cake batter.
10) Bake for thirty to forty minutes, 'til cake tests done.
11) Cool before servin'.
