Ham 'N Okra

Ingredients:
1 meaty ham bone or 3 large ham hocks
3 cups water
1 and 1/2 pounds butter beans, fresh -or-
2 [sixteen ounce] cans butter beans, drained
2 tablespoons Crisco or other solid shortenin'
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 pound okra, washed and sliced thin
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon pepper

Instructions:
1) Put the ham bone and water in a large saucepan.
2) Cover pan and bring to a full boil.
3) Reduce heat. Simmer and cook, covered, for forty-five minutes.
3) Remove the ham bone from the pan.
4) Pull the meat off the bone, shred it fine,
then return both the meat and the bone to the pan.
5) Wash the butter beans and add 'em to pan.
6) Heat to simmerin'.
7) Stir in the remainin' ingredients, and simmer 'til the beans
and the okra are tender.
8) Discard bone and serve.
